From Warboys (Hunts), which is recorded as Wardebusc in 1086 and Wardeboys from the 12th to 14th centuries. The place-name derives from the Old English personal name Wearda + Old English *busc ‘bush’ or perhaps Latin boscus ‘wood’ with influence from Old French bois ‘wood’.
Some of the early bearers may belong with (2). From Old Parisian French garder Norman warder ‘guard’ + bois ‘wood’ used to describe a forester or officer in charge of a forest.
