Serbian Croatian and Slovak (Markoš): from a pet form of the personal name Marko (see Mark). In part it is of Hungarian origin (see 2 above).

Arabic: from Marqus, Arabic form of the name of the apostle Mark. Bearers of this surname are Christians. Compare Markus 4 and Morkos.

Ethiopian: from the personal name Markos, Ethiopian form of Mark. — Note: Since Ethiopians do not have hereditary surnames, this name was registered as such only after immigration of its bearers to the US.
