Barbo Family History
Barbo Surname Meaning
Italian Spanish and Portuguese: from barbo ‘barbel’ (the fish) hence a metonymic occupational name for a fisherman or possibly a nickname for a man with a sparse beard, the fish being distinguished by beardlike growths on either side of its mouth.
Italian: derivative of barba, a term meaning ‘uncle’ and ‘bearded man’ (see Barba 1 and ).
Croatian and Slovenian: presumably of Italian origin (see above). In Slovenia, it may alternatively be derived from the female personal name Barba, a short form of Barbara.
Altered form of French Barbeau.
