Altered form of northern French Tacquet or Taquet: nickname from a diminutive of Old French tache ‘hook buckle loop; distinctive mark’ (see Tache).

Altered ending reflects the Canadian and American French practice of sounding the final -t. See also Tacket compare Tackitt.

In some cases, also Scottish: possibly a variant of English Tuckett.
