Slovak (Maďar); Croatian and Serbian (Mađar): from Slovak Maďar Croatian and Serbian Mađar an ethnic name for a Hungarian (see Magyar ). Jewish (from North Africa): nickname for a chatterer from a participle based on the Arabic verbal root mhd ‘to speak babble’. Jewish (from Hungary; Madár): adoption of the name in 1 above either as a Hungarian calque of the formerly used German-based surname or because the Hungarian surname (or word) has some sounds in common with the original surname.
