Hungarian (Kádár) and Slovak (Kadár): occupational name for a cooper, from Hungarian kádár, a Slavic loanword. Hungarian: from a personal name in Hun mythology. In 19th-century Hungarian romantic literature this was taken as a common noun meaning ‘judge’ or ‘chieftain’, from the time of the Magyar conquest of the Carpathian Basin. Jewish: in some cases an adoption of the Hungarian name; in others a variant of Kader.
