Woodbine Family History
Woodbine Surname Meaning
English (mainly East Anglia): topographic name or a metonymic occupational name from Middle English wodebinde woodbine ‘honeysuckle or bindweed’ (Old English wudubind) a word that was also used to denote various other climbing plants including ivy.
It is not clear what sense this would have had as a medieval byname but it could have denoted someone who grew such plants, used them for medicinal purposes, or lived at a place where they were known to grow.
