From the place-name Trekenning (St Columb Major, Cornwall) recorded in its great variety as Strepquenny in 1302, Trehepkenyn in 1294, Trepcunyn in 1323, Tripconnye in 1594, and Trekennyn alias Terkinnin alias Tripkennin alias Tripcony in 1690.

It derives from Cornish tre(v) ‘farmstead’ + an Old Cornish personal name *Hepkenin, for which there are partial parallels in Breton and Welsh.
