Staniland Surname Meaning
From Stainland (WR Yorks) which is recorded as Stanland in 1086 and Staineland in the 13th century. The place-name derives from Old English stān ‘stone rock’ later replaced by Old Scandinavian steinn ‘stone rock’ + Old English land lond ‘land’.
The 1272 early bearer example ‘at the stony land’ cited below seems not to have become a hereditary surname.
