Sproxton Family History
Sproxton Surname Meaning
from Sproxton in NR Yorks and Leics both of which are recorded as Sproxtun(a) in the 13th century; the Leics place-name is also recorded as Sprawson in 1539 and Sproson in 161.
The place-names probably derive from an Old Scandinavian personal name *Sprok (genitive *Sproks) + Old English tūn ‘farmstead estate’.
The surname may occasionally have been confused with the Cheshire name Sproston.
