English: variant of Sturton, a habitational name from Sturton le Steeple (Nottinghamshire), Great Sturton (Lincolnshire), Sturton by Stow (Lincolnshire), or possibly Sturton (Northumberland), all of which place names share the same etymology and early spellings as mentioned above.

Scottish: habitational name from Straiton (Ayrshire), Straiton in Liberton (Midlothian), or South Straiton in Logie (Fife), all named with Old English strǣt ‘street, Roman road’ + tūn ‘farmstead, estate’.
