From the rare Middle English and Old French female personal name Licoris derived from Old French liquirice (Medieval Latin licoricia) ‘liquorice’ the dried root of the plant Glycyrrhiza glabra used in cooking and in medicine.
The surname was later wrongly associated with the English word lickerish (Middle English likerous) ‘wanton lecherous’.
