Italian (southern):: (of Albanian origin): either an occupational name derived from Albanian lëkurës (definite form lëkurësi) ‘flayer (knacker)’ a derivative of lëkurë ‘skin’ or a habitational name derived from a placename Lëkurës (definite form Lëkurësi) in southern Albania.
The surname is borne by descendants of the Albanian Christian refugees from the Turkish occupation of the Balkans who in the 15th century took refuge in southern Italy.
Possibly also a plural (Li Cursi) of Cursio from a short form of the personal name Accursio from medieval Latin Accursius (see Accurso).
