Austrian German and Slovenian: from Kraner, an Austrian German dialect habitational name for someone from the former Habsburg Duchy of Carniola (Slovenian Kranjska, German Krain) in present-day Slovenia.

It is also a translation into Austrian German of the Slovenian surnames Kranjec, Kranjc, and Krajnc, which are derived from a Slovenian form of the habitational name (see Krantz).
