Isidore Surname Meaning

French and West Indian (mainly Haiti and Saint Lucia): from the French personal name Isidore which is derived from Greek Isidōros composed of the elements Isis (the name of an Egyptian goddess mother of Horus) and doros ‘gift’ hence ‘gift of Isis’. This name was borne by various Christian saints including the great encyclopedist Saint Isidore of Seville (c. 560–636).

Because of its perceived similarity to Isaac and Israel it also became popular in modern times as a Jewish personal name. This surname brought to the US mainly from the West Indies.
