English (North and West Midlands): habitational name from any of several minor places generally named from Old English æsc ‘ash’ + mōr ‘moor high tract of barren ground marsh’. In the case of Ashmore in Dorset however the early forms show that the second element is Old English mere ‘lake’.

This surname is also common in Ireland.
