Hobbis Family History
Hobbis Surname Meaning
Variant of Hobbs or more likely a reduced form of Hobbins. See Hobhouse. Perhaps from Great or Little Hautbois (Norfolk) with 12th-century spellings like Hobosse, Hobuisse, and 14th-century Hobesse.
The place-name probably derives from Old English *hobb ‘hummock, tussock’ + *wisse ‘meadow, marsh’ or wisce ‘marshy meadow’.
However, any of the early bearers listed below may belong with (1).
