In Kent, the name may also be a shortened form of Hogben, a nickname from Middle English huck-bone ‘hip bone, haunch bone’.

The origin of huck is obscure but it is probably from an ancient Germanic root huk- ‘to be bent’ and cognate with Old Norse huka ‘to crouch, sit bent, sit on the haunches’.

Additionally, huck-backed means ‘hump-backed, hunched’.
