Hetman Family History
Hetman Surname Meaning
Polish, Ukrainian, and Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): from Polish and Ukrainian hetman ‘military leader’ (a derivative of German Hauptmann; see Hauptmann), a status name for a military officer or for the elected leader of a community.
In many cases, it was applied as a nickname. As a Jewish name, it is generally artificial; the literal sense ‘military leader’ never applies.
Compare Getman. In some cases, possibly also an Americanized form of German Hettmann (see Hettman), a cognate of 1 above.
