Gobat Family History

Gobat Surname Meaning

of uncertain origin. It is found in the French-speaking Bernese Jura (Switzerland) and in neighbouring Doubs and Haute Saône in France. It may be a variant of Gobet which occurs in the French-speaking canton of Fribourg (Switzerland) and in Doubs and Haute Saône.

Gobet is explained by Morlet as a nickname, a diminutive of Gobe from Old French gobe ‘vain, proud’. Derivation from Old French gobet ‘morsel’ is also formally possible (see Gobbett).

Alternatively, Gobet and Gobat could be relationship names, reduced forms of Gobert and Gobart from the Old French and Old High German personal name Godebert (see Godbert).
