Fernyhough Family History
Fernyhough Surname Meaning
Principally from the obsolete place-name Ferny Hough in Endon (Staffs) which is recorded as Fernihalu in about 1278 and Fernyhalg in 1307 but possibly occasionally also from Fernyhalgh in Broughton (Lancs) which is recorded as Fernehalgh in 1500 and Fernyhalgh in 1516.
The place-names derive from Old English fearnig ‘ferny overgrown with fern’ + halh ‘nook corner’.
