English: unexplained. Hispanic: probably an altered form of Catalan Daguer, an occupational name from daguer ‘knife smith’. The surname Daguer is no longer found in Catalonia (Spain) while the altered form Dager is present in the adjacent areas of southern France, though it is very rare there.

Hispanic: probably an altered form of Basque (Gipuzkoa) Daguer, itself an altered form of southern French Daguerre, a habitational name with fused preposition d(e) ‘from’ for someone from any of several places in Béarn called Aguerre.

The placename is of Basque origin (see Aguirre).
