Cockin Family History
Cockin Surname Meaning
Perhaps from a pet form of the Middle English personal name Cok (see Cock) + the diminutive suffix -in. In its variant forms, the name is difficult to separate from (2) -3 and (4) from Middle English cokin (Old French coquin) ‘scoundrel’.
Possibly from Middle English *cokin, apparently a variant of coket ‘seal’ also ‘bread made from fine flour’. See Cockett and compare Ralph Cocunbred 1209 in
Cockin bread is presumably the same as Middle English cocket bread. See Cockayne. See Cocking.
