Italian (southern): in Sicily and Calabria possibly a nickname from cuccìa denoting a gruel of boiled wheat mixed with oil, milk and sugar or honey (from medieval Greek kokkion, classical Greek kokkos ‘grain seed’).

Alternatively, it may be an occupational name for a cereal grower from medieval Greek kokkias from kokkion ‘wheat’ + the occupational suffix -as.

It can also serve as a nickname for someone with a large, hard, or otherwise remarkable head from medieval Italian coccia ‘head’ (earlier ‘shell’).
