Ashkettle Family History

Ashkettle Surname Meaning

From the Middle English personal name Asketill (Old Scandinavian Ásketill), a compound of áss ‘(pagan) god’ + ketill ‘kettle, cauldron, helmet’. In pre-Conquest England, it was probably mainly current in E Anglia.

Compare Axtell, Askell, and Anketell, all from other versions of the same personal name. Ash- is a post-medieval dialectal development.

Ashkettle was once common in Suffolk but is absent there in the 1881 census, apart from the now extinct variant Ashkittle.
