Turkish: ornamental or topographic name from regional aran ‘sheltered nook’ also ‘summer camping ground of nomads’.

Indian: topographic name from Sanskrit aranya ‘grove’.

This is one of the ten surnames borne by members of the Dasnami order of monks whose name is based on the place where the sadhu who funded the clan was initiated.
