Irish: variant of Moran. Italian (Veneto): variant of Marano. French: from an old personal name probably derived from marenc an adjective meaning ‘marine’ (attested in Old French cormarenc ‘cormorant’ literally ‘sea crow’) and derived from Latin mare ‘sea’ + the suffix -enc (from ancient Germanic -ing).

Romanian (Mǎran): nickname derived from the adjective mare ‘big’. Indian (Tamil Nadu Kerala): derivative of Tamil Kundravan ‘of the hills’ via the variant Maravan.

In southern India this is a name traditionally borne by temple musicians.
