Sudds Family History
Sudds Surname Meaning
English (Kent) is a variant of the now rare or extinct Kent name Sudd with a post-medieval excrescent -s, unless Sudd is in fact a shortened form of Sudds. Sudd may arise from Middle English sudde, meaning ‘mud bog’ (Old English sydde), though the expected dialect form in Kent would be sedde.
Alternatively, it may be a variant of the northeastern England name Suddes, which may have reached Kent through coastal trade down eastern England. Suddes is probably also a variant of Sudd with the post-medieval excrescent -s.
It may also be a topographic name derived from Middle English sudde, meaning ‘mud bog’ (Old English sydde), but in northeastern England, the expected form would be sidde.
Alternatively, Sudd might originate from Middle English shudde and sudde (Old English scydde), translating to ‘small house, hovel,’ or ‘shed’ (for animals), and ‘pigsty’ (see Shedd).
Again, the expected form in northeastern England would be sid(de) or shidde.
