English: from Middle English Modde, a pet form of the Latin female name Modesta (Old French Modeste). This was an exceptionally rare personal name in medieval England and was hardly less so in medieval France where the male use of Old French Modeste (from Latin Modestus) is better evidenced but quite uncommon.

From Middle English Mod(de), Mud(de) are pet forms of Old English or ancient Germanic male personal names beginning with Mōd- ‘courage’, though these were also rare.
