English: habitational name from Stowell (Somerset), Stowell (Gloucestershire), East and West Stowell in Wilcot (Wiltshire), or Stawell (Somerset), all named with Old English stān ‘stone, rock’ + wella ‘well, spring, stream’.

The surname was taken to the Isle of Man by 1511 from whence it migrated to Lancashire and Yorkshire.
