English:: habitational name from any of various places called Stockwell, including Stockwell in Lambeth (Surrey) and Stockwell in Cowley (Gloucestershire) from Old English stocc ‘tree trunk, stump’ + wella ‘well, spring, stream’.

Perhaps sometimes in northern England a variant of Stockill, a habitational name from Stockeld in Spofforth (Worth Yorkshire) and perhaps also Stockheld Grange in Barwick in Elmet (Yorkshire).

The placenames derive from Old English stocc ‘tree trunk, stump’ + helde ‘slope’.
