Americanized form of Croatian and Serbian Šaban (see Saban) a cognate of 1 above. Albanian: from the Muslim personal name Shaban of ultimately Arabic origin (see 1 above).

In North America this surname is probably also an altered form of the much more common Albanian variant Shabani.
