Makefield Family History
Makefield Surname Meaning
From Makerfield (Lancs), an alternative name for the Domesday hundred of Newton, now part of West Derby hundred. The place-name is recorded as Macrefeld in 1121 and Makefeld in 1206.
It may derive from an earlier place-name from a British word related to Welsh magwyr ‘wall ruin’ + Old English feld ‘open country’.
