(Kent): variant of Burvill, a habitational name from Barville in Tilmanstone, Kent, named with Old English bær ‘bare’ + feld ‘open land’.

Habitational name from Bardfield Saling and Great and Little Bardfield (all in Essex), which is perhaps named with an unattested Old English byrde ‘(river) bank, border’ + feld ‘open land’.

The name is still most common in northern Essex.
