Farnborough Family History
Farnborough Surname Meaning
From Farnborough (Berks), which is recorded as Fermeberge in 1086 and Ferneberga in 1167; Farnborough (Hants) recorded as Ferneberga in 1086 and Farenberwe in 1259; and Farnborough (Warwicks) recorded as Ferneberge in 1086 and Farneberue in 1236.
Possibly, also from Farnborough (Kent), recorded as Ferenberga in 1180 and Farnberg' in 1226; and Farmborough (Somerset), recorded as Ferenberge in 1086, though no compelling medieval evidence that these last two places gave rise to surnames has come to light.
The place-names all derive from Old English fearn meaning ‘fern bracken’ and beorg meaning ‘hill mound’.
