How nominations
are selected and
awarded
Your nomination must first meet the eligibility criteria. If it does, it will move forward into the research stages, and Historic England staff will assess it.
There is a rigorous assessment process that includes verifying details about the figure and researching potential addresses before a selection of nominations is presented to the National Blue Plaques panel. They decide who should be chosen for further research and ultimately who is approved for commemoration.

About the Blue
Blaque Scheme
Historic England’s National Blue Plaque Scheme tells the stories of inspirational people from all walks of life who have made a significant contribution to human welfare or happiness and have made an exceptional impact in their field, community, or on society at large, throughout history.
The national scheme is run by Historic England on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. It builds on the value and success of the London scheme (which continues to be run by English Heritage) and local schemes across the country.
The Blue Plaques Panel
The scheme is led by the Blue Plaques Panel, an independent group of academics and cultural commentators who meet several times a year to review and approve nominations for Blue Plaques.
