About Rutherford County, North Carolina, U.S., Marriages, 1779-1868

This work contains abstracts of all known marriage bonds issued in Rutherford County from 1779 to 1868, when marriage bonds—as a prerequisite for marriage—were discontinued. Most of these records were abstracted from a microfilm copy of the original marriage bonds on file at the State Archives in Raleigh, with a few coming directly from bonds and licenses in the county courthouse in Rutherfordton. They refer to some 12,500 persons, including bondsmen.

Entries are arranged alphabetically by the name of the groom and list:

  • name of the groom
  • name of the bride
  • date of the bond
  • name of the bondsman

From 1851 forward the entries also list the date of the actual marriage.

Remember that because these records come primarily from marriage bonds, they indicate an intention to marry. They do not represent proof that the marriage took place unless a marriage date is included. Also, keep in mind that spellings may vary in older records.
