Zak Family History
Zak Name Meaning
Polish (Żak); Czech and Slovak (Žák): from Polish żak Czech (and Slovak archaic) žák ‘student schoolboy’ presumably a nickname for a student or a youthful or studious person. An earlier meaning of this word which is ultimately derived from Latin diaconus Greek diakonos ‘deacon’ was ‘novice; candidate for the priesthood’ and so in some cases the surname may have denoted someone who had been destined for holy orders. Croatian (Žak): nickname of the same ultimate Latin origin as in 1 above meaning ‘candidate for the priesthood’ or ‘scribe scholar’. Alternatively it may be a Croatized form of Hungarian Zsák which is from the personal name Zsák shortened from Izsák (see Isaac ). Slovenian (Žak): nickname from Middle High German sack ‘bag sack’ (see Sack ). Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): variant of Sack 1 and 5. Chinese: variant Romanization of the surname 石 based on its pronunciation in the Shanghai dialect see Shi
