The Buckinghamshire placename derives from Old English hwēol ‘wheel something which wheels round’ + denu ‘valley’ perhaps meaning ‘curved valley’ and the Derbyshire placename derives from Old English hwēol + dūn ‘hill’ perhaps meaning ‘hill with a stone circle’ or ‘hill with a waterwheel’.
