Czech and Slovak (Václav): from the personal name Václav Old Czech Vęceslav Latinized as Wenceslaus from an Old Slavic name composed of the elements vet'e ‘more greater’ + slav ‘glory’ or ‘famous’ (from slava ‘glory’). It was borne by a 10th-century duke of Bohemia who fought against a revival of paganism in his territory; after his death he was adopted as patron saint of Bohemia.
