English: habitational name from Stockport in Greater Manchester, formerly known as Stopford. The place name is recorded in the 12th century as Stokeport, probably from Old English stoc ‘hamlet’, ‘dependent settlement’ + port ‘marketplace’ (see Port). The confusion of the second element with ford appears in 1288, and the form Stopford is recorded in 1347. German: occupational name from an agent derivative of Middle High German stoppen ‘to repair’.
