They became confused in the late Old English period. English: occupational name for a swineherd, from Old English su ‘pig’ + hierde ‘herdsman’. Irish: when not of English origin (see 1 above) a reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Suaird, Ó Suairt, usually Anglicized as Sword.
