Scutt Family History

Scutt Name Meaning

Americanized form of Dutch Schutte ‘archer’. English: nickname for a short person from Middle English scut(e) ‘short’ or else for a swift runner from Middle English scut ‘hare’. English: occupational name possibly from Old French escoute ‘scout sentry spy’ a derivative of the verb escouter ‘to listen’. However the word scout does not appear in English before the 16th century and retains the vowel length which would have to be lost to produce the surname Scut(t). The name might also have been confused with Scott .
