Compare Norris 1. Irish: regional name for someone from Ulster, the northern area of Ireland, in part as an Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac an Ultaigh (see McNulty) or (in Westmeath) of Ultach. German: from a short form of a Germanic personal name composed with a cognate of Old High German nord ‘north’.
