German: unexplained; perhaps of Slavic origin (see 2) or a shortened form of Kurrer, from an agent derivative of Middle High German kurren ‘to grunt’. Perhaps an Americanized spelling of Polish Kur, nickname from kur ‘rooster’. See Kurek.
