Ikin Family History

The de-aspirated variant of Hicken is often alternating with Eakin. It may occasionally originate from the rare Middle English female personal name Idekin, which is a pet form of Ide or Idony (see Ide and Edney).

This form is also linked to Iken (Suffolk), which is recorded as Ykene in 121. The place-name pronounced /aikən/ likely derives from an Old English personal name *Ica (genitive *Ican) along with the Old English ēa, meaning ‘river’ or ‘stream’.
