It is a pet form of ancient Germanic Hardo (see Hard ) + the Middle Dutch hypocoristic suffix -kin. The name of a (presumably continental) moneyer at Stamford is stamped HÆRƉCYN HARƉCIN and HARCIN on coins of the reign of Edward the Confessor.
