English: from the Middle English personal name Hankin a pet form of Hann which in English usage was usually a short form of Hanry (Henry) and occasionally perhaps a rhyming pet form of Randal (Randolph). In Middle Dutch Hankin was a pet form of Johan (John) a usage which may have been brought to England by Flemings after the Norman Conquest but no examples have yet been found in Middle English where a man named John was also called Hankin.
