Halling was named in Old English as ‘family or followers of a man called Heall’; Hawling may have the same etymology or it may have meant ‘people from Hallow’ (a place in Worcestershire named in Old English with halh + haga ‘enclosure’) or ‘people at the nook of land’ Old English halh (see Hale ). German and Dutch: variant of Helling . Swedish: cognate of Hallin formed with the suffix -ing ‘belonging to’.
