Most probably a variant of Gill, in any of the senses pronounced with a hard g. It could also be Scottish, English, or French, an uncomplimentary nickname from Old French guile, Middle English gile ‘deceit’ or ‘treachery’. Possibly also an Americanized spelling of German Geil.
